Volvo speed limiter removal:
Beyond 180 km/h.

Since 2020 Volvo limits every new car to 180 km/h (112 mph) – whether it is an XC90 T8 or a V60 B5. We remove the limit by software coding, by remote connection while your car stays in your driveway.

Background

Why is my Volvo limited to 180 km/h?

As part of its safety strategy, Volvo decided in 2020 to limit the top speed of all new cars to 180 km/h (112 mph) – regardless of engine power. Engines and chassis are built for considerably more; the limit sits purely in the software.

With the speed limiter removal we reset this software value, so your Volvo reaches the speed its engine and calibration allow again. The coding is available for cars with Sensus and with the newer Google built-in system.

100 % remote

No workshop, no travel. Coding is done in your driveway.

Reversible

The factory setting can be restored at any time.

Good to know

Speed limits and approval rules differ by country. Check whether your registration documents state a lower top speed and whether your papers need to be updated, and inform your insurer.

Your tyres must be approved for the speed your car can reach (speed index on the tyre sidewall).

Performance upgrades (OEM software, NRS tuning) can also affect the vehicle approval – please check with your local inspection authority.

FAQ

Speed limiter removal – FAQ

How fast will my Volvo go after the speed limiter removal?

As fast as engine, gearbox and factory calibration of your model allow – depending on the engine up to 250 km/h (155 mph). On the T6 and T8 Recharge plug-in hybrids with Google built-in the limit is raised to 220 km/h (137 mph). We tell you in advance what to expect for your car.

Which Volvo models are supported?

All Volvo models with the factory 180 km/h (112 mph) limit, built from 2020 onwards – with Sensus or with Google built-in, e.g. XC40, XC60, XC90, S60, V60, S90 and V90. We check compatibility by VIN before booking.

Do I have to come to Germany?

No. The speed limiter removal is done by remote connection: you connect your Volvo to a Windows laptop with an ENET cable and start a small remote program – we do the rest, usually in 20–30 minutes. All details in our remote coding guide.

How much does it cost to remove the Volvo speed limiter?

The speed limiter removal costs €450. Together with the OEM performance software you pay €950 instead of €1,200. All prices are final prices in EUR (small business under German law, no VAT shown).

Does it work outside Germany?

Yes. Because we code by remote, it works wherever your Volvo is – for example in Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Sweden or the UK. You only need an ENET cable, a Windows laptop and internet. We speak German and English.

Is it legal in my country?

Rules differ from country to country. Before driving faster than before, check whether your registration documents state a lower top speed and whether an inspection or update of your papers is required. Your tyres must be approved for the speed (speed index), and you should inform your insurer. Always obey local speed limits.

Can a Volvo software update undo it?

A software update at the dealer or over the air can reset codings. In that case we simply apply the coding again.

Can the speed limiter be restored?

Yes. We can restore the factory setting at any time by remote – for example before returning a leased car.
